Cavapoo vs Maltipoo: Which Doodle Is Right for You?

Cavapoos inherit the Cavalier's famously gentle, people-first nature. They're cuddly, easygoing, and tend to bond evenly with everyone in the household — which makes them a great pick for families with younger children. Maltipoos are equally loving but more one-person-oriented; they'll often pick a favorite human and shadow them everywhere. They can be a touch more vocal and alert, which makes them excellent little watchdogs.

Both breeds thrive in apartments, but the Maltipoo's smaller frame (often under 12 lb) makes it the more portable of the two. Cavapoos are sturdier — better suited for homes with toddlers or active kids who want a dog they can play with without worrying about fragility.

Both coats are low-shedding and considered allergy-friendly, but neither is truly "hypoallergenic." Expect a professional groom every 6–8 weeks and brushing 3–4 times a week to prevent matting. Maltipoos tend to have a tighter curl that mats faster; Cavapoos often have a wavier, easier-to-brush coat.

Both are highly trainable thanks to the Poodle parent. Cavapoos need 30–45 minutes of activity per day; Maltipoos are happy with 20–30. Both respond best to positive reinforcement and early socialization. Maltipoos can be more sensitive to harsh correction, so keep training upbeat.

Reputable breeders screen both parent breeds. Cavaliers need cardiac (MVD) and syringomyelia screening; Maltese should be screened for patellar luxation and liver shunts. Poodles add genetic diversity that generally reduces these risks in the cross, but health testing on the parents is non-negotiable.

A well-bred Cavapoo or Maltipoo from a health-tested program in the U.S. typically ranges from $3,000–$5,500. Significantly lower prices often indicate skipped health testing or puppy-mill origins.
